Alice’s Country Diary Quilt

Alice’s Country Diary Quilt combines the wonderful technique of English Paper Piecing (EPP) with beautiful hand embroidery and appliqué.

“I love wildflowers, and thought I knew a lot about them until I started walking a lot more several years ago. I began to really take notice when sketching the plants in the hedgerows and woodlands of my surrounding countryside. This quilt was inspired by those lovely walks xo.”

Botanical Embroideries

There are 25 different botanical embroideries in total, featuring wildflowers and some butterflies and insects too! Each embroidery is framed with a beautiful EPP border. Learn new skills, or develop existing ones; we provide full instructions for embroidery stitches including satin, daisy chain, French knots and many more.

Varied techniques

This lovely heirloom quilt combines the techniques of embroidery for the beautiful botanical designs, English Paper Piecing for the surrounding rings, appliqué and super simple patchwork to bring it all together at the end. Learn new skills, or develop existing ones – they are all surprisingly easy to learn!

Unique Design

Alice’s quilt is completely unique. She was inspired as a child by watching her grandmother and mum sew with Liberty fabric as well as creating beautiful embroideries too. She’s combined these techniques in this stunning quilt. Each botanical scene has been carefully crafted by Alice and is inspired by the English countryside.

Alice's Country Diary Quilt

Make an heirloom quilt your family or friends will cherish for generations

This quilt was originally designed as a Block of the Month Club. many of our lovely customers have already enjoyed making it.

“I had done very little embroidery before embarking on the Country Diary quilt as a BOM (Block of the Month Club). I was a little nervous but needn’t have worried as the explanation of the various stitches involved was very clear and thorough. The EPP rings went together really well and were relaxing to do. After appliquéing each square block there was a real sense of achievement! Thank you Alice for designing such a beautiful quilt.”

Starting on a new or reinvigorated sewing journey

Hey, I'm Alice!

I’ve always loved playing with fabrics, finding particular joy in combining colours. Finding a snippet of Liberty amongst my grandmother’s quilting stash of worn-out dresses and vintage fabrics was always a highlight and, from there, my passion for Liberty fabrics grew.

Trained in scientific research, I’ve kept my passion for sewing alive throughout my Ph.D in genetics, selling handmade bags at student fairs. It was from here that I started my business, Alice Caroline. I now enjoy running my own business and designing sewing patterns and kits, which are stocked in the iconic Liberty of London store. Alice Caroline specialises in Liberty fabrics, sending Liberty fabrics, patterns and kits all over the world.

In my Country Diary Quilt, I’ve brought together my scientific curiosity and my love of design; it features 25 embroidered blocks celebrating British wildflowers. Each one is stitched with an eye for beauty yet also rooted in research, drawing on the history, folklore and medicinal stories of the plants. This quilt celebrates the meeting place of science and creativity, keeping alive both the heritage of quilt-making and the wonder of the natural world.
Alice xoxo
