When we sew, we do so from the heart and what better way to express that sentiment than this sweet Tender Heart cushion. It is the perfect gift for a loved one to show you care, or even to keep for yourself and admire. This cushion will look lovely on any bed,sofa or garden chair.
The construction of this cushion combines a mixture of techniques – raw edge appliqué and embroidery. Raw edge appliqué is a bit like collaging with fabric and whilst easy to do, it does require some concentration and a slower speed setting on your machine, if possible.You can make the stitching as intricate, or as simple as you like, defining petals and leaves for extra texture and visual drama if desired. Embroidery is a timeless method of embellishing by hand which encourages mindfulness through slow stitching.The embroidery involved are basic satin stitch, back stitch and French knots, easily mastered, these increase the handmade look of the cushion as well as adding fun texture.
This Tender Heart cushion kit includes coloured Liberty Tana Lawn® fabric for the appliqué and flange. Quality ivory quilting cotton for the background and cushion back. DMC Mouliné Spécial cotton thread for the embroidery.

You will need: Scissors, pins, sewing machine, embroidery needle (size 8-10), Pilot Frixion Gel Pen (or any other heat-erasable fabric marker, but always test on scrap fabric first according to manufacturer instructions), thread to match each fabric being appliquéd, standard crafting glue stick (such as a Pritt stick), embroidery hoop (6-8” (15.2-20.4cm) size recommended).
Optional: Free-motion quilter’s foot, spray starch
Cushion pad: 16” (40.6cm) square
Iron-on transfer adhesive (such as Bondaweb): approx. 10” x 161⁄2” (25.4cm x 42cm)
Optional wadding: 171⁄2” x 171⁄2” (44.4cm x 44.4cm), use to add extra body to the cushion front.
