Liberty Garden Chair Covers

Pauline from the studio has made these gorgeous Liberty Garden Chair covers using a Tresco stretch denim.  This fabric is hard wearing and yet a little stretchy which is perfect for this project.  The finished result is a comfortable seat which will last a long time.  I asked Pauline about the project.

Liberty Garden Chair Covers

“Ever since I started working at Alice Caroline, Tresco A has been a favourite of mine.  It leaps off the shelves with its bright yellows, greens, reds, purples, pinks and blues.  The colours should not go together but they blend beautifully and stand out against the green of the lawn and the hedges.  If ever a design and colour way said “summer” then this is it.”

The fabric:

Tresco is a watercolour study that represents the rich collection of plants gathered from around the globe. It is formed from a selection of flowers, ferns and succulents from the windswept sand dunes and landscaped borders of the Abbey Garden on the Isle of Tresco.  It has such vibrant colours that are simply perfect for re-vamping old and tired chair covers.

“My summer garden chairs were looking a little sad and, when I discovered that we had some Tresco A stretch denim hiding in the studio attic, I knew it would be perfect to re-vamp my chairs.  With some careful measuring I set about the transformation.  I was worried that the stretch denim would not be strong enough for sitting on so decided to make slip covers for the back of the chairs and add the denim on top of the original seats.  With the denim being stretchy, the tight fit helps to give a neat look to the back with no sagging.  I pinned the seat fabric to the original seats as tightly as possible.  The fabric was then stretched around the rods that slide into the chair frames and stitched in place to the underside.  The double layer of fabric made it tricky to slide the rods back in place but, with a little help from my husband, they were coaxed back.  The chairs are strong and useful again and are now the perfect accompaniment to a summer’s afternoon in the garden.”

Gosh – these are beautiful.  There has been much admiring of the finished chairs in the studio when we are passing though (in a socially distancing type of way).  Thank you for sharing your project with us Pauline xx
