Summer Meadow Liberty Quilt — Front Cover of Today’s Quilter Magazine

This Summer Meadow Liberty quilt was designed by Alice for Today’s Quilter Magazine and featured on the front cover of Issue 25. The medallion quilt starts with a Japanese-inspired applique centre panel and works outward with half square triangles and flying geese borders, all in Liberty Tana Lawn arranged in rainbow order.

Here is the quilt outside my studio.  I have entered it into the competition at the Festival of Quilts so I hope to see it on display.  I love seeing the displays of quilts at the FOQ.  Seeing quilters pouring over the wonderful designs is such a joy.

I designed the central appliqué pattern after a visit to Japan to see a friend.  I used elements of Japanese design in this panel and was originally going to use it to make a cushion.  You could always make a matching cushion to go with the quilt.  I started with the appliqué at the centre and worked outwards.  I have always wanted to make a Medallion Quilt so this was the perfect chance.

I’m a big fan of efficient piecing methods and enjoyed using the eight half-square triangles and flying geese methods in this quilt.  The quilt rather took on a life of its own as I was making it and asked for the solids in the border as it grew.  I love rainbows and have arranged the fabrics in rainbow order in every border!

Here’s my Summer Meadow Liberty Quilt as a work in progress.  I really enjoyed piecing this together as I went along.  I had a vision in my head but it didn’t come together until the end as is often the case with projects like this.

Here’s a snippet of the quilt in the magazine.  For the full instructions you will need to buy a copy of Issue 25 of Today’s Quilter Magazine.  You can buy the pack for the Summer Meadow Liberty Quilt here.

I have really enjoyed everything about making this quilt.  Working with Today’s Quilter was such fun.

Let me know if you make one.  I really love to see what people are making from Liberty fabrics.
