Liberty Fabrics and Bridgerton Bra

Carolyn’s Bridgerton Bra:

There is something so special about seeing Liberty prints being turned into beautiful garments. Carolyn has transformed her leftover fabric from the Liberty and Bridgerton Collection into a bra! Using the romantic, floral charm of our Bouquet Parade “C”, this handmade bra is the perfect blend of practicality and indulgence.

It’s a wonderful example of how even the smallest sewing projects can feel luxurious, personal, and completely unique.

A few words from Carolyn:

“After a few failed attempts to get an appointment for a bra fitting, I decided I would attempt to make my own bra.  I have no idea what possessed me, but I headed off to search for how to go about this project. Having watched Asmaa on sewing Bee knock up a bra that left Esme in awe, I decided it couldn’t be too difficult to put one together!

I used a pattern I already had, Simplicity 8229. The back of the envelope was a bit confusing, however after opening the instructions I was surprised to see the parts and steps for construction, all clearly laid out and easy to follow.

The first thing was to source the correct fabrics and notions. There are a few very good bra making suppliers on line, but I found @Seamesew Supplies. You can order bra making kits, bra patterns or separate notions to suit your needs. This site was really helpful in breaking down what I needed to construct my bra. I placed my order for a bra making kit and it arrived within a few days and was beautifully presented.

The first make, even though I measured myself, sewed up nicely but didn’t fit! However, I really enjoyed the process and learnt so much.

I was really chuffed with my bra straps. These take a bit of time to work out how to assemble, but once you have done this once, you won’t struggle next time. It had taken me a few attempts to order the correct bra underwires. Look out for long and short options. I ordered the long ones in error at first. You can download a sizing guide to help with this part, but it may, like me, take a couple of attempts before you are happy with the fit. Once you have the right size you will just keep re-ordering. Also check for the back fastener. They come with two and three hook options.

I then re drafted to the better size for me, did a toile with Swedish tracing paper for fit, then after some research, realised that I prefer a non stretch bra cup and band for support in the front and the stretch at the back. So I decided to use some left over fabric from my Bridgerton dress make, Bouquet Parade “C” and what was left of the stretch lace from the first bra making attempt, to trim it. It has turned out so pretty and I am a little bit in love with the finished bra.

There are lots of You Tube tutorials if you need a more visual guide to look at as well. I think I will be wearing my handmade bras from now on.

I hope this has inspired you to sew your own bra using Liberty scraps or how about using one of our scrap ribbon packs? Now there’s an idea……”

Happy sewing
