Liberty Paisley Quilt – Quilt as You Go

Anna’s made this lovely Liberty Paisley Quilt using Liberty Tana Lawn plain fabrics to compliment the patterned paisley fabrics.  Anna tells us about her make:

Liberty Paisley Quilt

“Having just completed the ‘Flower Garden Quilt’ which I thoroughly enjoyed, I wanted to make a really simple quilt for my brother as a Christmas present.  I’ve made my parents and sister a quilt so thought it was overdue to make one for my brother Pete.  The Flower Garden Quilt took over a year to complete and so I wanted a quick win this time as well as wanting to make something non fussy, suitable for a chap.”

“”I decided that the Liberty range of paisley fabrics was a great place to start.  I used two paisleys – Felix & Isabelle K and Felix & Isabelle B-40. I piled up the bolts in the studio with the gorgeous Liberty Tana Lawn plain fabrics and found some that matched perfectly to these two colours. For the plain fabrics I used plain Rust H, plain Ochre W and plain Airforce J.”

“I used the Quilt As You Go technique to make my Liberty Paisley Quilt which is a really easy method of quilting.  I layered up the bottom two quilt layers (the backing fabric faced down with the wadding on top of this).  Then added the first strip of my quilt (faced upwards on the top of the quilt) and sewed along the top edge.  With right sides together, I added the next strip onto the bottom of the first strip and sewed along the full edge of the quilt.  I pressed this down towards the wadding and away from the first strip.  I added each strip of my quilt in the same way one piece at a time.  Once I had added all of my paisley and plain strips to the quilt, I trimmed the edges and bound the quilt in plain blue to match the backing fabric.”

“The whole quilt took me around 3 hours to make including cutting although the hand stitching of the binding to the back takes a little more time. If you wanted to save even more time then you can machine sew the binding to the back first and then machine to the front covering up the previous stitches.  I prefer the hand finish to the back of my quilts.”

“I’m really pleased with the quilt.  The colours are fabulous.  Liberty have the most gorgeous range of plain Tana Lawn® to choose from.  The colours are so vibrant and mix so well with the Liberty paisley prints I have chosen.  I really hope my brother likes it – he’s recently bought a wood and so I thought it would be lovely to snuggle underneath it in the open air!”
