This gorgeous Platinum Jubilee community quilt was made by lots of quilters all over the UK and USA, coordinated by Suzanne Campion and Leisa White. Suzanne and Leisa began these community quilts back in 2021 with their Love and Kisses quilt (click here to read more about that quilt!) and have been very kindly donating them to our Quilt SOS project. Suzanne tells us more about this amazing quilt..
“Leisa and I really enjoyed the Love and Kisses community quilt we organised in 2021, so in 2022 we decided that we would like to make another to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. I designed the EPP medallion block. We asked quilters to use Red, White and Blue favourite Liberty fabrics from their stash. There is a mixture of Tana lawns and Lasenby quilting cottons, the two work together beautifully.”
“The quilt top consists of 115 blocks that were made by quilters in the Uk, USA, Canada, Finland and Australia. The project really captured a lot of people’s imagination to contribute and it was a joy receiving post once the blocks started to arrive.”
Many had fussy-cut the central star of their blocks, they were inspired by some of Suzanne’s examples and are also part of the fussycutting online community.
“The liberty fabrics have so much detail that they often draw quilters into focusing on these elements with fussycutting.”
“Leisa joined her half of the blocks and they made their first journey across the Atlantic in May 2022. I joined the remainder of the blocks and the edging filler blocks. It was lovely to be sat handsewing the blocks whilst watching the jubilee celebrations on tv. We both met up at Liberty London at the end of June and photographed the finished quilt top in the store.”
“Trudi Wood, worked her magic free hand longarm quilting on it for us. It was then exhibited in the group category of Festival of Quilts in August 2022. It was so lovely for those who had contributed to come and see the finished quilt, spot their blocks and meet others who had joined this community project.”
:The quilt went across the Atlantic and was displayed on Leisa’s stand at Quiltcon, Atlanta in February 2023. Again many of the US contributors were able to see their work. Leisa brought it back to the UK this summer and we were thrilled to hand the quilt to Alice at this years Festival of Quilts. It is always such a pleasure donating to the Quilt SOS project. We both love that Alice Caroline personally take the quilts to the charity you are supporting, giving that extra quilty hug of love and care before they are gifted to their forever home..”
“We organised a cathedral window quilt this year which we will gift to next years project once it has been exhibited at the Festival of Quilts and we have plans for another EPP quilt in 2024.”
