Top tips for teaching children to sew

The long summer holidays are the perfect time to teach children to sew ☀️

Sewing builds patience, creativity and confidence. Take some time away from screens, teaching them a skill they’ll carry forever and maybe they’ll even discover a new passion!

Here are our top tips on teaching children or grandchildren to sew:

What is the best age to introduce sewing to children?

Hand sewing can start as young as 5 or 6 with supervision.

Machine sewing usually works well from around 8 upwards but every child is different.

Start with hand sewing

Threading a needle, making simple stitches and sewing two pieces of fabric together.

It builds patience, fine motor skills and a huge sense of achievement.

Choose the right first project

Aim for small, achieveable and something they’ll actually want to make (& finish!)

A felt animal or a simple pouch are great places to start.

Let them choose the fabric

They’ll instantly feel more invested in the project.

Whether it’s their favourite colours or characters, whatever makes them excited

Safety first

Supervise children around scissors and pins at all times.

Use age appropriate tools and child size scissors are a game changer!

Celebrate every stitch

It’s not about perfection, praise their effort and watch their confidence grow!
