Sarah’s turned her church pew into something special with these liberty fabric bench cushions, sewn in festive poinsettia quilting cotton with smart piping details. The cushion sewing project includes a box-style seat pad and a matching Holiday Berries square cushion finished with a Capel covered button — lovely sewing patterns for adding handmade comfort to any bench.

I asked Sarah about the project. “The pew comes from a chapel I attended as a child and is therefore very special to me in my home. I’ve been wanting something to embellish it and make it more inviting as a place to sit. I especially liked the poinsettia quilting cotton fabric when it arrived in the studio so it was a natural choice.”

“I saw a picture of a buttoned cushion in a magazine which gave me the idea of making one for my pew. After discussing the idea with colleagues in the studio, we decided a box cushion would not only hold it’s shape well but it would also give a more elegant finish. The piping (bought from a haberdashers) completes the look of the cushion. This was my first attempt at creating a box shape for a cushion. While the top and side panel fitted together easily, it was harder to fit the bottom. I had to take extra care to ensure the corners and centre poinsettia panel lined up accurately.”

“With the leftover ‘Holiday Berries‘ fabric, I made a simple square cushion which I stuffed with the same fibre filling and used a Capel covered button to finish it off.”
The finished cushion looks great on the bench and I’m really pleased with the finished design. It gives a really Christmassy feel but I’m planning to use it all year round.”
