Day 2 of our 12 Days of Handmade Christmas brings this clever fabric chain garland that can be enjoyed year after year– it’s a lovely way to use up scraps of Liberty or other festive fabrics. Ruth from our production studio whipped these up using some Liberty quilting cottons.
You will need:
Lots of fabric strips
Scissors or rotary cutter
Thread
Sewing machine (or hand-stitch if you prefer)
Lightweight Interfacing (optional)
1. Cut your fabric into strips. You can make your garland as long, chunky or as delicate as you like by simply adjusting the width and length of your fabric strips. Have a play with different sizes – just remember to allow for seam allowance.
2. Cut matching strips of lightweight fusible interfacing and iron them onto the wrong side of each fabric strip. This helps give your garland structure.
3. Take one strip of fabric and fold it in half, right sides together, lengthways. Stitch along one short edge and the long edge to form a fabric tube.
4. Carefully turn the tube right side out, press and sew along the remaining short edge, tucking in the raw edge.
5. Add your fastenings. We went for snap fasteners but you could also use velcro!
6. Repeat until your chain reaches it’s desired length.
