Gingham & Liberty Fabric Sawtooth Star Mini Quilt

Our very own Ellie has made this beautiful Star Mini Quilt using beautiful Liberty Prints and gingham’s! With a stunning choice of colour, this quilt is the perfect example of how simple blocks can turn into gorgeous quilts. You can find more of her amazing projects over on Instagram

A few words from Ellie:

I had never really sewn before I started working at Alice Caroline but that has definitely changed now that I’m a few years in! One block I’ve always loved but never tried making was the sawtooth star block. After watching Alice make countless of them whilst filming and editing sewing tutorials, I thought it was time to give it a go! At first, the plan was to make just one block to have as a mini wall hanging.

I’m not a lover of machine sewing – I much prefer hand sewing. It may be slower but I feel like I have much more control over my project. For this reason, I decided to English Paper Piece my block and make my own templates. The finished block measures around 5.5”.

After making just one block, I was hooked and carried on making more and more, sewing tiny pieces together. My handmade templates started getting less accurate and a tad ropey (it all worked out in the end!) and I decided to finish with 36 blocks – an acceptable amount to call a ‘mini’ quilt! This also kept my quilt at a size where I could use 1m of fabric for the backing too.

I shopped from my stash for this project, using up some random ginghams and plains I’ve had lingering in there for over 4 years! It felt soooo good to finally use my fabric instead of just hoarding it.. who knew!!

I sewed all my squares together, removed all the papers and was ready to back and bind the quilt and the most PERFECT fabric arrived in the studio for my backing: Besty Check B from Liberty’s SS26 collection. A larger scale Betsy in bright pink with a gingham overlay 😍 I think it looks fab and I’m obsessed with it!
