Hope Street Cathedral Windows: A Beautiful Community Quilt

Every year, Suzanne and Leisa lead an extraordinary global sewing effort to create a community quilt for our Quilt SOS project. They have outdone themselves with the breathtaking Hope Street Cathedral Windows quilt.

With contributions from around 70 talented sewers across the globe – spanning both sides of the Atlantic and even Australia and New Zealand – each participant sent in a handmade Cathedral Window block. These blocks, created with Liberty fabrics (a mix of Tana Lawn and quilting cotton), reflect the individual styles of their creators while coming together in perfect harmony.

Suzanne and Leisa met in Liverpool, at a flat just steps away from the iconic Hope Street. This street, symbolically connecting Liverpool’s Anglican and Catholic cathedrals, inspired the quilt’s name. Against this historic backdrop, Suzanne and Leisa pieced together the blocks, transforming them into a beautiful quilt.

The Cathedral Windows design was the perfect choice for this quilt. The repeating pattern elegantly ties together the different fabrics. This quilt beautifully demonstrates the power of collaboration.

Before making its way to GARAS as part of our 2024 Quilt SOS project, the Hope Street Cathedral Windows quilt was proudly displayed at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham, where it drew admiration from all who saw it. Now, it will serve as a treasured comfort for children and families.

We want to thank Suzanne, Leisa, and everyone who contributed a block to this incredible quilt. Together, they have created not just a quilt but a symbol of kindness and creativity that will bring comfort and joy to those in need.

What is Quilt SOS?

Quilt SOS is a charity initiative founded by us in 2016. Each year we donate Liberty quilts that have been lovingly crafted by our wonderful Alice Caroline community. Over 450 quilts have been donated since we started the project. The quilts bring a sense of belonging and comfort to those who are experiencing hardship.
