Liberty Fabric Christmas Stockings

Dawn has made these beautifully festive Christmas stockings from Liberty quilting cottons from the Festive Fair collection & the Wiltshire Shadow collection.

“I got this idea from a trip to North Carolina and the fabulous Biltmore Estate. A lovely lady was demonstrating quilting to all the visitors and she was making a ‘quilt-as-you-go’ Christmas stocking using strips and oddments of fabric from her stash. A brilliant idea! She kindly let me take a photo of her pattern etc and so I was able to cobble together the stocking with the diagonal sections using some of the lovely Liberty quilting weight fabrics from this year’s Christmas collection. A really good way of using up small amounts from your stash – the strips I used ranged from 1” to 2.5” but you could go wider or narrower too.”

“Having made one side of the stocking I decided to make the back just using strips in lines (rather than diagonals) as this was a bit quicker to piece together. What I didn’t realise until I’d finished was that I should have reversed my stocking shape! Instead I ended up with 2 sides the same – hence     the two stockings! So in the end I used a plain back on each and sandwiched everything together with a standard quilt binding method. A hanging hook and a ribbon bow added a festive touch.”

“My stockings are quite large (all the better for holding more presents!) but this could be done on a smaller scale with even smaller scraps and strips for a more dainty effect.”

“Merry Christmas everyone!”
