The Importance of Sewing Communities

Sewing communities and groups are such a valuable way of combating loneliness and providing much-needed community and friendships. We spoke to The Lewes Sewing Bees, who told us all about their lovely sewing group. The Lewes Sewing Bees regularly donate quilts to our Quilt SOS project, make projects for our blog and often visit us at Festival of Quilts!

The Lewes Sewing Bees came together around a decade ago, as Veronica fondly recalls, “We first met some ten years ago and quickly realised the value of sitting together as a group and all it brings.” Cristina adds that their shared love for needlecraft and interest in patchwork and quilting initially united them.

Susanna shares her journey of joining the group with a heartfelt sentiment, explaining, “I originally wanted to learn how to patchwork and quilt so that I could finish my grandmother’s hexagon coverlet. The Bees’ input into the completion of this project has been invaluable. Quite simply, I could not have done it without them. I feel I am very lucky to belong in this extremely talented group.”

Sue emphasizes the age diversity within their group, stating, “Our ages range over a spread of 20 years, and we bring very different life experiences to the group.” As their bond grew stronger, the Sewing Bees became a sanctuary of support, friendship, and creative exchange, providing solace during life’s challenges. Gill emphasises the importance of friendship and inspiration within their group, stating, “My thoughts about our group are friendship firstly, but also inspiration.”

Anne beautifully sums up the essence of their group, saying, “Most importantly, it’s about life. We share it with each other, we lift each other up and laugh a lot. I might now live on the other side of England but this is still my group. Thank you dear bees, all my quilts have you, your fabrics, and probably crumbs from Friday cakes stitched into them.”

Sue expresses the positive impact these sessions have “I feel relaxed and uplifted after a Friday morning together.” Cristina echoes this sentiment, adding, “After a morning sewing with the Bees, I feel recharged and positive and always look forward to the next session.”

Thank you to the Lewes Sewing Bees for chatting with us all about your lovely sewing group – what beautiful words! 💕

Has this inspired you to start a group of your own? Remember, sewing groups don’t always have to be in-person either, there are lots of ways to connect with people online on social media. Facebook groups are great to join, or you can take part in sewing challenges, and follow other fellow sewers on Instagram and create your own online sewing circle.

We have a lovely online sewing community group on Facebook – ‘Alice Caroline Makers’. Click the button below to join and get to know our other customers and share your creative projects!
